Unique Replication Capabilities added to MemCloud

Clusters such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Spark use application-level data replication to protect data against disk or node failure. However, if your application also needs single-machine stacks like MySQL and PostgreSQL, data may still need to be replicated and protected.

Kodiak has added replication services to the VCI Fabric to solve this problem. Both 2-copy and 3-copy continuous, asynchronous replication are now available within the MemCloud service. Any virtual disk (vDisk) can be designated in its DataContainer with specific levels of replication. Typical use cases include:
  • Reliable boot disks
  • High availability data disks
  • Write logs

Fabric-level replication is much simpler than software RAID or mirroring within each cloud host. Replication is built into the hyper-converged infrastructure of Kodiak MemCloud. Virtual disk replication removes the burden of mirroring from the application host and eliminates the RAID tax on both CPU and network bandwidth. Unlike mirroring within a cloud host, there is minimal performance penalty.

With the addition of fabric replication, MemCloud is simplifying the infrastructure provisioning for multi-stack applications. Replica copies are placed in different fault containment zones (virtual racks) and rebuilds are automatic - no user or application intervention. Host administration is greatly simplified. Applications perform better and infrastructure costs are reduced, while meeting the specific replication needs of each application.
